Cuil.com is, imo, a spin-off of google in a new format, boasting that it will search more pages, with more detail, and will require less equipment to do the job. One of the founders was a former google employee.

When you send a search, it shows it in a format like a page of magazine ads. The individual results quote more text from the particular page, and an image, depicting products from that site.

I noticed that my site does rank fairly well in this new SE, but it shows a picture of a related product, but not one of my particular products. Somewhat misrepresentative if you ask me. I'm not sure I like that too much. thoughts?

The likes of Google, Yahoo etc need not fear this search engine.

Nope - I think they have some relevancy issues to solve before they'll be seen as serious competition.

They're getting good press coverage. Unfortunately for them though, they should have waited until the search side was working well before the big PR push.

Now, a few million people have seen a pretty poor search engine.

I don't know how anybody can compete with Google. Do you remember how relieved you were when you first discovered Google? It was inspirational and has carried on getting better.

But, no matter what, I never complain when my site does well in another SE.

From what I have seen, it is biased towards American sites.

google.co.uk serves very good results from a UK perspective. Cuil doesn't. The results are pretty much useless for UK centric searches.

But cuil was badly commented with really bad launch full of bugs. Look when I searched for http://www.cuil.com/search?q=usb+magic+jack "USB magic jack". It even shows me the first of its search result pointing to a page showing PAGE NOT FOUND!

...yeah, not exactly quality results there. sad

you'd think that a new engine being launched by people with a search engine background would have things better sorted upon launch.

Almost like they took a shortcut on the testing & QA to get it live for, oh, I don't know, say...SES San Jose...
