Most of my clients receive a 120+ page analysis each week. I advise my clients to only focus on a small % of the weekly report each week. They/we retain the full reports to enable special comparison analyses to be undertaken from time to time.

We do a quick scan of each report to determine on which areas we recommend out clients focus, this week.

As you indicate, there is a massive amount of data available and if you try and focus on all of it, you will soon not be able to "see the woods for the trees".

So, to answer your question, IMO you need a full weekly report, but you choose a small selection of the report to focus on, each week. That selection will, of course, change each week.

I was listening to a teleconference this week on Google Analytics and the host answered this topic well when it comes to GA ... put on a specific had with some specific questions, and go digging for those answers.

I think everyone would likely be interested in different data. I have one client who is most interested in the GEOGRAPHY.

I send some clients step-by-step directions on what to look at in their e-commerce solution and Google Analytics data. I base this on what data I use to monitor their advertising, revenue, sales of specific products and approximate profitability.

Web Analytics guru Eric Peterson believes the solution to figuring out what to look at will be implemented eventually by Web Analytics providers by making it easier to define and distribute data related to a chosen set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Until that happens this can be done manually. I recommend his book on the subject for clarification. One of his core guidelines is that which KPIs are distributed to whom are kept at a minimum and provided regularly.

Too much data doesn't get acted on and neither does data not provided frequently enough. A limited number of KPIs that differ depending upon the requirements of those who receive them is far more likely to actually be used for improvement.

Our main focus points are the following:

    1 - market share growth
    2 - revenue
    3 - page views
    4 - visits
    5 - unique visits

After that, it's all of lesser importance to us - we have the data, and someone who crunches it on-site for us in nifty ways, but top line, that's the short-list.

If you have e-commerce, you can add in sales figures as well...
