Has anyone heard of this new extension yet? .mobi is supposed to be for sites that are built specifically for phones, PDAs, etc. It is a relatively new domain extension and right now you can only register domains for which you have the name trademarked. After August, it will be open to the public to register any domain name.
The web development firm I work for is trying to figure out if we should get clients to purchase their domain with the .mobi extension if they think they may ever do a site for phones, PDAs, etc. The cost right now is $110 on GoDaddy to get one of these domains. Is it worth it? Is this just a waste? Any thoughts are appreciated.

People accessing stuff "on the move" is the next "big thing".
At the moment you need specialist kit to do it. Within a couple of years, everyone will have that.
I think that it will be here to stay. Get with the program!

Hold up there my Pub-handy friends!
While mobile this and that is hot "on the Continent and across the pond" as it were, North Americans are slow to adopt this stuff.
My money is on wait - right now it's a waste for money, IMO to pay $110 for a .mobi domain that'll be availble for peanuts shortly.
Plus, if someone else "takes" a company's name an registers it for the .mobi version, that company can still make a legal claim to the domain, as it's their name anyway.
Add to this the following thought/question:
Who the frig is going to surf websites from a phone? Sorry, been there, done that, dropped the package.
This whole thing stinks of rotten guacamole, IMO - at least until the flux capacitor is perfected. By that time in history maybe North Americans will find a need for mobile access to websites.
My money is on wearable LCD screens and person-portable, full-feature computers catching on first, though...

I respectfully disagreee with sportsguy. i think that the sites that will become available through mobile phones will be tailored to fit the tiny cell phone screen. Its like the analogy of a movie from the theatre, then made to fit your (much smaller) tv screen.
Also cell phones are ever moving forward with tech advances and soon you will be able to do more than all the stuff we can already do with the darn things.
1. video
2. site surfing
3. gps
4. movies
5. who knows???

I can understand why the whole thing could be big, but mobile phone surfing isn't for me, unless I'm bored miles away from anything electrical.
I guess surfing on a phone while walking down the street will always be alot easier than doing that on a laptop! lol.
but by the time this does kick off, mobile phone makers won't be far off releasing all phones with internet browsers (hopefully firefox :D) so the whole .mobi thing will crumble IMO

I am pretty certain mobile phone surfing will catch on. My friend has a Palm Treo and it's great to get sports scores, check email, gets news...simple things. I'd imagine someday it'll be great for more in depth things like buying something off ebay, buying plane tickets... but I don't see it ever being used the same as the internet on a desktop or laptop. People aren't going to sit there staring at a phone surfing it for fun. People are going to use it to accomplish things.
The internet being surfed by mobile devices isn't what I'm questioning though. What I'm trying to figure out is will this new .mobi extension be needed for sites that are built for small mobile devices or does that seem to be a waste?

4x4mobile.com explains it.
One: If we believe that a domain should be as short as possible, then the counting should go over SLD+TLD= total characters.
Two: Most mobile browsers seem to work fine with W3 HTML 4.01. Why then bother with WAP etc.?
Three: If a given phone does not display html properly, then the Opera Mobile browser is usually a solution.
Four: Internet-capable cell phones are now so cheap that it should not be option to buy one that cannot access html webs.
We try to have .com + .net + .org + .tv extensions for our domains, but we will never invest in .mobi that breaks down the principles of W3 and efficiency if we can do it short, simple and cheap with html.
Maybe, .mobi is just another invention to give registrars, appraisers and resellers some business.

I can very well envision good solid business reasons to get the .mobi domain. A .com version of a site may well have all the flashy-blinky stuff that looks great on a big monitor. However, the .mobi version of a site may be reformatted to better suit people who are looking at one inch square screens. (That is, the .com "Chinese Restaurant" Direcotry Listing page of a site might have photos, ratings, comments and all that. The .mobi version might have a very brief text description of the place and full street address - and no more.) If you happen to own the HomeTownFoodies.com site, it could very well make sense to own both the .com and .mobi domains.

This is not about the opportunity to have this kind of web style.
The thing is there is no really need for e dedicated extension.
And if it would, then .mobi is way too long to fit in the ongoing domainer SEO philosophy of The shorter the better.
BTW: the .ms extension is fastly growing in popularity pointing to Mobile Surfing. Short .ms domains (.LL) are selling better than the (.LLLL).
