I'm not sure if anyone has encountered this or not, but a client of mine currently has RSS links on his site. But when the links are clicked on to read the rest of the story visitors leave his site. What he wants is for his customers to stay. Is there any software out there that will take certain RSS feeds and pull the data so that customers can read it all on his website? I would certainly give credit to the original source, but my client wants his customers to stay and read.

Anyone have any ideas? I am trying to avoid copying and pasting the data each day from the source if possible.

    Thanks in advance smile

You can use rss-info.com/en_rssinclude-simple.html - it works nicely, although it is not SEO-friendly.

Thanks Marky. I have a friend who is working on a caching program that will feed information into a database and run on a cron job that will keep the data fresh. But I do appreciate your email smile

Another much less high-tech way to keep visitors from completely leaving your client's site is simply open the full article/link in target="new" but I am assuming you're after a different solution.

As in Perl motto, there are many ways of doing it ...

One is to use a RSS parser which extracts the information from the links and displays it in your page. You may use a script which does this on the fly instead of a cron driven method as this approach will be always 'fresh'. But the full source will need to be linked to the original site.

The second method is to use a framed page with your client site in the top frame and the original source appearing at the bottom. Many script directories resort to this method.

Many of the popular RSS feeds require that publishers leave their links alone, period. They want the full benefit of the advertising from the traffic, which is understandable.

As Prowler said, there are solutions - like caching and displaying, etc. - but I haven't been anxious to try them.

Can you elaborate more on the first one Prowler? Any examples?

There are many scripts out there which can be the starting points for the above. If you use PHP, MagpieRSS: RSS for PHP can be one.

There are many modules for Perl - notably XML::RSS and XML::Parser.

CaRP is a nice PHP script to handle RSS feeds. You can do a lot with it if you use a MySQL database and filter/aggregate, etc. Easy to install and modify to fit your needs. For instance, we use arrays of different feeds and filter them by keywords for specific pages on some sites. The ability to use your own CSS with it a bonus also.
