I am building a large service site with 100s of pages which require payment to enter - how can these be made accessible by search engines - any ideas appreciated.

Server side user agent detection, make the login parameter:

if loggedin or if useragent == spider
    allow user to access page

Very easy to do, however all you have to do to get around that is to switch useragents on your browser, most users are not aware of that fact so it's not a big issue.

Otherwise you'd have to do ip based testing, which is a pain, and requires constant updates of your ip lists, and might make google etc think you were cloaking, which you would in a sense be.

If you want google to have the ability to show a cached version of a page from your site in their search results, why do you make that page a "pay to access" page?

Edit I guess you could turn off cacheing.

I find that when I search for something, get a result, and then get to the page and have it request a login (or worse - a subscription) to view the content I get quite annoyed. I doubt I'm the only one.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not opposed to paying for content! I just hate the concept of searching for something, having info possibly in reach, then having to pay a fee to even determine if the info I'm looking for is there or not. I'll simply move on to another site in this case.

A better choice than having search engines able to index the actual content is trying to get summary & description pages indexed instead. Of course, this is harder from an SEO standpoint, but goes a long way towards not annoying potential customers.

Some content sites have even taken this to the point where the first page of an article is freely available, but subsequent pages require a subscription or login of some sort. This allows a person to see if the article is on the right track towards what they are looking for, but still keeps the majority the content protected.

    Hope this helps!

I find it very annoying too, but it is widespread with traditional publishers (especially newspapers, magazines).

Google wants to index the content. You can see the title and a snippet of the content in the SERPs, but when you click the link you are taken to a "buy this article" page that includes a "log in if you have an existing subscription" link.

    Example: http://www.google.com/search?filter=0&q=site%3Awww.blackwell-synergy.com+10.1046+1468&num=100
