I know this is a very basic question but I have not been able to find any kind of definitive answer.

Should the Title and Content Description be different on every page of the website?

I have looked at hundreds of the top sites on various search engines and they are all over the place. Some have different titles on each page but the same description, others have the same title and description, still others have different titles and descriptions. The one thing they have in common is that they are all in the top 20 in whatever search category I was looking at.

Does it really make a difference?

The title and the meta description should reflect the content of that page, so will be different for each page.

Usage of headings within the page is an important point too.

One of the things that I was reading in another section here was that you should have it reflect the context of the page and you can also have it work with your headers. Something else to keep in mind is how you write it.

I can't recall where I found the example but I think it was in the "keywords" forum where it had mentioned you can use your main keywords in your page title and a seperate keyword that focuses on that particular page which you will use throughout the context. For example, if you have a web page that is about soy candles. Your page title can be focused on soy candles with a rich keyword choice. You can then use a specific key word for that particular page. Say for example you want to do a page specifically for holiday soy candles. You would have Soy Candles - Holiday Soy Candles as a title or something to that effect that touch on rich key words and keyword phrases on that page. In essense, you want your main keyword on the pages, and your specific keyword for that particular page.

I hope this helps.

It also is a good idea to have your page <title> content be slightly different from your primary page header content, say your <h1>, say the same thing in different ways that is.

Yep, I forgot about that. :D I remember reading that in another forum here. I think it was mentioned that you can use the same wording but if you switch it around, the spiders won't think anything of it. Can't think of the exact wording but it was something to that effect.

You're trying to catch as many keyword combinations as possible in two very restricted spaces with very high seo value, if you put too much in either it either gets ignored or may possibly trigger an overoptimization penalty flag.

Plurals, singulars, different order of terms, all affect how the engines treat your page in terms of individual searches. I've brought pages up 10-20 places just by careful adjustments in this area, plus internal link text etc.

Not to change the subject but something I've been curious about is what's the issue when you're using italics or bold in your content? Does that really make a difference in how your pages will be treated when the spiders visit?? huh

From what I've seen lately, I really don't think it makes much of a difference whether you use bold or italics.

What if I have a product subcategory or category page without paragraph text, am I hurting not using header text?
