I feel like an idiot to even be asking this but I'm not a tech person (thats my excuse anyway)

If you have static html pages in your root directory can they be spidered and indexed if there's no link to them from your web site?rolleyeys

Umm....thanks in advance.

In general only pages that are linked to from somewhere else can be found.

The only way that the files within a folder can be found, without links, is if there is no index page in place and instead the names of the files in the folder are simply displayed as a list.

Ok thanks , these pages just sit in the root directory (not in a sub folder) so I guess it's safe to get rid of them as they won't be indexed anywhere. There are links to a few of them from the web site itself, they are indexed ok so I'll leave them and delete the rest.

You can see exactly what is indexed by doing this query on Google:

site:domain.com

without any spaces in it.

There's some speculation that if you have the Google Toolbar installed, Alexa, and other widgets that report your page visits back to mamma, that these pages may be discovered and included. Little chances of it actually happening, but you should know that if it has been visited, someone somewhere probably knows that page exists, unless your PC is totally clear of such nasties.
