Hello. You know when you go to a web site and you try to "Save As" or "Copy" a picture or graphic by using the right mouse click maneuver and then an alert pops up and says this picture is protected from copying? Well do you happen to know what code to use to protect those images/pictures from being copied?

Thanks in advance!

It is a complete waste of time using that. It is easy to circumvent, and annoys the crap out of real visitors who use their right mouse button for opening links in a new tab or window.

Instead you should watermark and digitally sign your images; and supply them at a resolution that makes them useless for enlargement.

Thank you for replying. Unfortunately this is not an option for my client. Her website contians images of show dogs of this cut little show dog and apparently people "steal" images from one site to another and post them willy-nilly without regard of copyright infringement. Heck, she was one of them until I told her "that's not cool." I will mention a watermark to her, but knowing her nature and style, I doubt she would consider it. And already she is complaining about the low resolution images: "they're too fuzzy." smile

Is there anyone else who can help me with this?

Like g1smd said, there's no real surefire way to prevent someone from taking images from a site. What you originally described is referred to as a "no right click script" and they're easy enough to find.

And yes, they are really annoying because they interfere with browser functionality and it's never a good thing to try to dictate how a visitor uses their browser. If you disable right click and bring up a warning message, it's like calling me a thief, and I find that insulting.

Also, no right click scripts don't work in all cases. Macs don't use right click in the same way as PCs, for example.

When all is said and done, all they have to do is take a screenshot of the page and there's no way you can disable that function on someone else's machine.

Or they can pull the image out of their browser cache, although I believe there are scripts that can prevent caching as well.

Watermarking is your best bet, but you should make sure you watermark it in a way that can't be easily Photoshopped out.

Thank you for your reply. I personally would not do this on my own web site or any OTHER client's. However, it is not my choice. This client is very adamant about how her web site should be regardless of the inconveniance on others (even her clients - go figure). And to top it off, she fired the designer before hiring me so I have to convert the last designer's Front Page stuff into Dreamweaver and create a template, etc... (this has been a horrendous ordeal all the way around). The client even wants a mouse trailer - arrghh!!

Sorry for the rant...

But, I gotta make a living so that's why I came to this forum. To see what advice you could offer. And I totally respect your comments and agree with them.

And I did find a code that worked thanks to JeromeQ's "no right click" phrase!

Now to find a mouse trailer.... sad

firebuffgal, sounds like you got a real dilly of a client there. wink

The best you can do in this case, I guess, is to implement the "no right click" script per the client's wishes, after explaining its limitations and the fact that it can be defeated in numerous ways.

As for the mouse trailer, gag me! Sometimes I think you just gotta hit the client over the head with a "clue-by-four". Mouse trailers are just another annoyance that remind me of an amateur personal site that's hosted on a freebie with tons of pop-ups and ads. Not that there's anything wrong with having an amateur site hosted on a freebie. That's how many webmasters get their start.

But if she wants a site that comes across as "professional" and refuses to listen to your advice, then if you need the money, I guess you gotta give her what she wants.

You said she fired the last designer, so she'd possibly fire you, too, when the site doesn't deliver, despite your giving her exactly what she insisted upon. <sigh>

Oh, and welcome to the forums! I really hope you'll stick around and contribute. smile

Beth: Thanks for the chuckle! You hit the nail on the head.

And JeromeQ: Thanks for the welcome. I hope to be able to contribute some day!

I totally agree about the way mouse trailers, animated gifs on almost EVERY page (eeekk!!), and such does not give a professional appearance. Unfortuantely, she does not have the budget to allow me to scrap the first designer's attempt and start over to provide a very fresh, sophisticated look. I have the corporate and small business design experience, so I hope she will refer me to some of her friends so I can show her what a real show dog web site should look like! smile

Have a great weekend, ya'll....

She hired you for your knowledge and expertise. Tell her that her method is a crap idea. Period.

Then show her the GettyImages site - a million images that no-one in their right mind would try to "knock off".

I found this link that has the code which disables the right mouse button click. Just copy it into your web page.

Or you can create it as a seperate .js file and make all your web pages link to it.

I have found free software to fix your problem with people stealing your pictures. The web address is http://www.prenap.com . It keeps people from stealing your pictures without disabling the right click event.

I have a trick which I found from real.com:

Simpily put the image you want to display as the bg image in a cell and put a transparent image in the cell of the same size. When people click as save, they would be saving a transparent image smile At least it annoys them!

Thanks, turboscout! I thought about this opton becasue it is a really good one, but there are soooo many pics. The no right click code is working great...

An update, I finally got my client to accept the idea that mouse trailers were very distracting. Yea! Now I need to convince her that the "floating paws" script is too distracting. What a piece of work I'm dealing with! [rant] I received 9 emails within a 30 minute period on one thing alone! And I thought I was picky!!! [/rant] wink

Funny!!

Now remember guys, I did NOT design this web site. smile I took it over from a previous designer and the client wants to keep with this design for a while. (Too bad for her.)

But here is the page with the floating paws AND right click protect... gotta love it!! At least I get paid to do this... wait a minute, isn't that what a hooker says?! Haha!!

And note the animated buterflies - woohoo!

I had a similar request from a client, I told them the problems, they still wanted the no right click, I found, modified a script, installed it, ran great. Of course won't work on mac, doesn't work on opera either, but who cares, target users don't use macs or opera, don't know that javascript can be turned off, or that right click blocking only happens through javascript, etc.

Of course no smart user can be stopped from grabbing your images, that's given. However, dumb users can be stopped quite easily, with around 97% success, which is pretty good.

I can't totally agree with g1 here, your job was to tell the client it's not a great idea, then, when she insists, tell her how much it will cost to implement what she wants.

When clients ask me to do stupid things, I'll tell them they aren't the best ideas, then if they insist, I bill them fairly high to do the job.

Of course if they keep asking for stupid things, at some point they probably won't be my client anymore.
