Hi. I have a device I'm fond of, which is to use a small scrolling marquee high in the body, with keywords inside. Now a client has asked me if I can render it invisible by changing the font to the same colour as the background. Invisible text is not something I would normally risk. Does anyone know what Google's current positon is on it?
TIA.

It's a two-step process:
Spam --> Ban.

Or in this case,
1998-style spam > ban
Google's position is quite clear, and unlikely to go pro-spam in this quarter.
BTW, Welcome

Hi,
there is something that I don't understand:
does the same apply to css rendering?
I though that google was kind of a blind user,
so a block of text with title, text description, etc, tagged correctly with h1, h2, lists etc, inserted in a div with a class,
and this class controlled with a css that renders its content as a really small text, maybe outside of the visible part of the document, can be considered by google as spam?
(considering that maybe another css rule, for example a css roll over, could make the same content visibile)
any advice?

"any advice"
Treating Google as if they are stupid is SEO-suicide.
What you describe is spam (what else could it be for?)

Hi,
I understand what you are saying and google's reasons
the case I am describing is a box with part of content that is not immediately visible, but is "activated" with a non-javascript roll-over, via css.
another case is a technique used on accessible web sites
where you include in a page a part of content (like an extra title, an alternative content, etc) that should be visible to non-visual browser, but invisible to others, and the easiest and accessible way is to use css and not javascript.
this is done not to spam, but to help users - and at the same time have a nice visual layout, using valid code and good css modern technique...
so I guess you are going to tell me again that for google this is spam!
too bad
Thank you for your help.

Intention matters.
Many people go down when a rival complains about their site.
That won't happen with an accessibility issue - but will if the process is misused.
The general position is pretty clear; if you are doing it for your visitors, then it's usually OK, if you are doing it for the SEs, it's not.
And some behaviours have been so misused for so long, that not only does Google know them and detect them with ease, but they no longer give the benefit of the doubt.
It's your site; you do what you will. But it's Google's index - and they make the rules for it.

Those rollover menu systems can trigger spam filters in some cases, so I always treat those with extreme caution.
