Hi there,
I see Google generating site links for my site in the google webmaster tools. However I do not see those links being shown on google search page. How does it work and how can i see that ? Thanks in advance.

You see them in webmaster tools. period.
'Webmaster searches' in Google's general search have been disabled - you'll read it here many times; Google does not show all your links.
But that does not matter. You can see them in webmaster tools, and no-one else needs to see them.
What matters with general search is that searchers find an accurate response to the search terms THEY are searching for. And my guess is, other than your competitors and you, searchers are NOT searching for links to your site

I think the question wasn't about backlinks being listed with the link operator, but more about sitelinks listed in the normal SERPs; sitelinks being up to six "mini-links" under the main entry.
The generation of those is automated. They are only shown when a site is listed at #1, and they only show for certain types of keyword search. That is, the site owner cannot control their appearance.

Apologies; and I agree. That's a Google Gimmick, not for us ordinary folk!

That's the problem with SEO. The terminology and features are evolving all the time.

New Site links may be fired only when you search with the primary keyword Google has associated with your site. In case you don;t like the links displayed in the site link, Webmaster central allows you to "block" it.
