I am not a fan of link exchanges at all... link exchange programs as a group are a major red flag to me.
But today I have come across a nasty little trick that some do.
Maybe everyone knows about it, but to tell you the truth, I have not seen it or been aware of it before.
I had a client email me a potential link with the description that I was supposed to add and LOW AND BEHOLD - within the description where HIDDEN LINKS!!!!!!!!!!
Talk about playing with fire.
How ridiculous this was, as it was supposed to be a "link exchange" for eco-friendly websites. Oh yeah... tread lightly, but don't worry about the humans!

There are and as far as I am concerned they should be respected with all their foibles and shortcomings, to try to tread over the top of them while crying peace to the planet and all that stuff is incredibly hypocritical in my opinion.
Like Yo! Wake up and safe the planet, but let us trick you with search engine spam to our benefit in the meanwhile.. I mean - helloooooooo!

hey excell, sportsguy
Link exchanges have their purpose. With regards to social networking, a link exchange may be a good place to learn about people that are open to the practice of linking.
excell, as you mentioned, you ask for links all the time from sites. I'm sure that at the beginning of that process, you didn't know that many sites that would willingly outlink to your site.
I'm not a big fan of link exchanges either, however, after doing some preliminary research, I realized that:
1) I don't know many sites that will willingly link to my site, at no charge
2) I don't have the systems set up to administer a campaign where I go into the market place and request links back to my site.
I'm probably not the only one with these shortcomings.
There must be a business solution in here some place.

From this process I learned that I need to have invitations to link to my site, displayed nicely and neatly and respectfully all over my site.
I put some of these requests up, but realized I could probably do much more.

If I have taken the time to personally review a good resource, learn what they are about and what they offer of interest to my audience and write my own custom description about them. I don't consider it a lot more work to shoot them an email to let them know that I have created a link because I think they are a great resource, invite them to review and make changes and invite them to link back if they would like.
The whole process is totally custom and yes time consuming, but worrying about what they make of my request or having a "program" to organise it makes it easy...I simply don't worry about it.

Interesting ...
Time is always the factor. Having said that, the pages that I most enjoy and will revisit are those that are timely info, well crafted etc.
It seems that the well crafted pages have that high "in person" quality to them. It's the opposite of black hat / fully automated page building
I'm trying a campaign where I'm asking related industry websites to answer a few questions for my new article. I'm interested to see the kind of reaction I'll get from these website owners.

Quick Q excell:
Is this type of campaign you do on an on going basis.. Or once in a while?
The point.. this could become a full time job, writing articles, interviewing, doing followups etc.
