Ok, so this topic keeps coming up:

Which directories should I submit to?

The short answer is you should submit to any or all relevant directories which will benefit you by supplying a link to your site from a related category.

Ideally, this directory will be well respected and offer links from sections within itself that have moderate to high Page Rank values (but don't let that be the ONLY guideline when determining link value). So, we're talking about places like DMOZ, Yahoo, JoeAnt, etc.

Don't feel like waiting a year plus for DMOZ? Don't want to spend the $299 for Yahoo? Worried you might submit to a spam directory and get penalized later?

Don't Panic (to quote the book) - this is an easy one to help you get sorted out...

So, how do you know which directories to approach and which are spam?

Well, spam directories are fairly obvious if you're into this industry.

...but where does that leave most folks who'll be reading this? The Webmaster trying to get their idea off the ground and develop traffic?

Well, thankfully someone who is into this stuff has made a handy list that they keep updated.

    The Strongest Links Directory List

It lists the directory, the link to it, the costs if any and the rules such as the directory requires a reciprocal link.

Do not worry about giving them this recip link. You'll still benefit from the link they provide you, as you're just starting out.

Now, you will have to carefully read through the submission guidelines for each and every directory. You will have to fill in the blanks and wait to see what happens. But, hey, we all have to go through this - suck it up and do the work!

So, go check out the list and get started - a year from now you'll realize this was the best spent time you've put into your site so far...

Not sure if it still works but you used to be able to bypass the $299 fee that Yahoo charges by having a site that has an RSS feed the creat a Yahoo account and add your feed to your MyYahoo page. Yahoo will then crawl your site. it might take a little longer than if you paid the $299 but I don't like to spend money unecessrily.

Nice tip - can anyone back this up?

Did that tip actually work to get a website listed in the Yahoo directory, or just to get them crawling you?

I was just contacted by a guy who started by saying he was interested in advertising on our site his email said:

I have browsed (I removed our web address) and I'm interested in purchasing advertising space in it.
I am mainly interested in placing a new page on your site with content and links that I will supply.

So to me this is a big red flag - I looked at his site and it does have an anti spam message but to me it just sounds strange...Any thoughts or advice?

    Thanks!!

maniac_sarah, this is just another form of spam. They send out a lot of these types of emails and never visit your site.

Oh and SportsGuy - thanks for the list of good directories. I have bookmarked it and will refer to it when working on my link building strategy.

I know that once upon a time you could submit to the international yahoos (like yahoo.ca for example) and it was free. But that is going back likely about 3-4 year I think. Last I looked they didn't have that option anymore.
