I am new to this, but I have heard the term directories before. I run a website that offers free movie & tv shows for the internet and mobile devices. Right now our hits are ok, but I want to increase them before I go the advertising route. What exactly are directories? How do I get involved with them and what are the benefits?
Thanks in advance, hopefully this is a reasonable question.

Hey d_d_ - welcome to the forums.
Directories are like the yellow pages for the Internet.
Yahoo, for exmaple, has a directory. They also have a search engine, so it can get confusing.
A directory is a listing of websites related to specific topics. Like you'd find a plummer in the "Plummers" section of the yellow pages, you'd find them in the same place in a directory.
Yahoo offers a pay-for-review service of $300 roughly - for this they will look at your site, and if it meets the guidelines, they'll include it. if it doesn't meet the guidelines, they reject it, but keep your dough.
www.dmoz.org is another good directory to be liste din - trouble is, it can take a year or more to get a listing in here. It's human edited, so every request for inclusion gets read by a human. Google uses this one as a resource to see what's new online - they use others, too, but dmoz is a starting point for them.
This list will give you an idea of the various directories, costs to be included and a lot more useful data.
You do want directory links pointing at your site, because links form the directories in that list above are generally seen as favorable by the search engines and are trusted - so they help you in the organic search results rankings.

Thank you, that is good information. Is there a piece of software that will list me in all of the free directories at once?
Also for the paid directories, is there a directory that is a 'must'? Considering I am quite small in my business venture and capital, paying Yahoo $300.00 is a little too much. So if I am going to invest, where would my money be best spent?

Don't use software to get liste dint he directories. Each one has slightly different rules, and if your software isn't up to date (many aren't), the application goes in wrong, then gets rejected.
Take the itme and submit to the top 20 free directories in that list - that will get you started.
The paid ones are, IMO, a toss-up. If you can afford it, you could snag a listing at Yahoo. That's one really good inbound link for you.
But, hold the phone: if you can afford the $299, why not just list in a bunch of the other paid directories and get more than one inbound link for the money?
I personally would choose option # 2 - spread the money across those other paid-inclusion directories in that list. Later on you can snag that link in Yahoo.
I still don't have a listing in Yahoo for one of my websites - and it generates over $300 a month from inbound search traffic right now. Yahoo's listing is not the be-all-to-end-all of links.
Use your money wisely and make proper business decisions to grow your site - don't jump to Yahoo first and spend all your money there - just because it's Yahoo.

Directory submission is important. When you submit your site in directory, it helps in getting more backlinks. According to me, do not use any software for directory submission, do it manually.

d_d_:
SportsGuy hit the nail on the head -- by all means, do your directory submissions one-by-one manually, as opposed to "blanketing the field" by using automated software.
You want to be sure you choose the right category for your site in the directory, and submission software will not always get it right (of course, you yourself might even choose wrong, but better for you to have control over that decision than leaving to the submission tool).
If you get the category wrong, it will take months just to find out that your site was rejected, so naturally you want to try to get this right up front.
To help you choose your category, check if known competing web sites are in the categories you're considering. And visit some of the sites listed to try to get a feel if your site is comparable.
And don't rush it... take the time to really be sure of the category decision you're making.
