Are there any good free directories for small business? What other type of free advertising would you suggest for a small business to potentialy gain a presense on the internet?

    There are many.

Submit your site to the Open Directory Project at dmoz.org. It is also recommended that you pay for inclusion in Yahoo directory. (I don't but many people give positive feedback after doing so).

Then sift through the directories found here and submit to any relevant ones. Here is a good place to start:

DMOZ seems to take forever to get into. And same goes for a lot of the other free ones. (I call this the internet black hole).

I have come across some great lists of directories lately. One page I like is here (not my site)

They give you a clue as to how long you can expect it to take to get listed. I found this particularly helpful.
