Are pages of reciprocal links now being actively penalized by any/some/all of the major search engines or are they just moving them toward neutral as far as page/site ranking are concerned?
Also, as noted in the title, what should be done with existing links pages at this point in time?
- Strip them to only the very few that actively add value to the site
- Keep them as is
- Keep them but set for bots to ignore (in case the rules change next week)
- ????

I don't think the search engines are targeting them specifically and penalizing them. But, the value of links from off-topic reciprocal links pages is not as high as it used to be.
As for your current links pages and what to do with them, I would keep them and make sure that there's not a lot of outgoing links on them (keep it to under 25 or so). If you have more than 25 outgoing links on the page I would make a new page if necessary. Also, I would add content to the page as well so that it's not just a "page full out links".

Thanks. I think I'll do just that. We bought a recip-links package before I found this site and learned that lots of what I knew a few years ago no longer applies.
Truthfully, I like the direction the engines are taking these days with site content and people-useful pages being the way forward.
