I'm in the middle of laying out ideas for a website redesign and was curious how many people still cater for 800X600 screen resolutions? or better yet, how many people design for mobile devices too.
It's been ticking away in my head, people using resolutions smaller than 1024 X 768 are about 8% of the overall traffic so it's still a significant amount but isn't it time they upgraded?

Liquid lunch.... err, liquid layout, is the way to go. 
Collapsable and expandable from 800 px wide to several thousand pixels wide.

haha, that's something I have been debating but the graphics and elements on page make it too hard to do and keep consistency across all web browsers.
The mock up I made looks good, easy to read, draws your eyes to the wanted areas but it comes up at 1000px and that's after I shrunk it down too :/ do you think this will be a problem?

Not to me.... my main monitor is 2880 pixels wide, or something.

Wow, isn't that a little over kill even in this day and age!? and it sounds like you have a second monitor too

if you decide not to go with fluid width, I have found that 1024 bridges the gap between widths quite nicely.

Personally, I still design for 800px wide screens. Why? Because wider paragraphs are harder to read. People can more easily get lost in a very wide paragraph, but can follow a more narrow paragraph easily. However, if you're one that has a site with 2+ content columns (not including navigation column) side by side, the paragraphs would then be more narrow by design.
Another thing to consider is that many if not most people will not use their browser to the full width of the screen. One more thing: fluid widths are harder to design for and ensure that all widths will present a nice looking web page. Your pages may look aesthetically pleasing with a certain pixel width, but looks ugly when the page is much wider. Don't get hung up on trying to design for wide screens. In contrast, it is quite a nuisance for a person with a more narrow screen to be forced into sideways scrolling because of a widely formatted web page.
Narrow is more universally compatible. Put your pages on a diet

I agree. I keep my pages well under 800.
I must admit that I hadn't realized how few people *need* that width - but I rarely use a browser full screen, and in my experience way fewer than 50% of users with larger screens do.
G1; do you stretch your browser to your possible 2880-ish?
I'm not knocking liquid layouts - but some of us don't have the skills or resources to go that way; and my priority has to be content, rather than visual beauty.

Rarely stretch all the way, but I might do that if I open a bucketload of tabs to make them all fit.
