Hi All, I am back for expert advice. I was in the process of updating my website but as usual I did something stupid and attempted to restore everything back to the way it was, the problem I am having is when I enter my address either by www.site address or http//:site address I get an error message and the only way I can go to my homepage is to end it with index.html. I have checked my other website to see what I have done wrong but I see no difference. What did I do wrong?

ok, so if you type in www.domain.com you get an error page but if you type in www.domain.com/index.html it works!? it sounds to me like you've somehow managed to get rid of a setting on a server that tells it if anyone types in www.domain.com it'll serve a certain page, such as index.html
are you on Apache or Windows hosting?

Look for the DirectoryIndex directive located either in the httpd.conf or in the .htaccess file.
Make sure that you do have the filename that you use for the default index page name listed in that directive.

Do you have use of your own server? If so, have you edited any files in the “/path/to/Apache2/conf” (where “/path/to” would be the higher up directories) directory?
Did you edit the “DirectoryIndex” directive in httpd.conf?
If so, you could change it to this:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.html.var index.shtml index.htm index.pl index.cgi
That way it will treat each one of those variations as the default home page. As for “index.html.var”, don't ask me about that one as it was set up that way by default when I installed apache on my computer.

I once worked with a server where the index page would only show automatically if it was saved with a ".htm" extension and not a ".html" extension. Just a possible suggestion but I'm sure it's not that simple.

The stuff in .htaccess applies to the folder it is in.
The stuff in httpd.conf is global for the site, (or sites if there is more than one on the server).

So basically many of the directives that work in httpd.conf will also work in .htaccess for the single site for which it controls, right?
